What are the different types of martial arts?

I want to take some form of martial arts but i was wondering what are the differences between them and what exactly is involved and covered under each type? Thanks!

Well there are many of them, some concentrates on kicking, other does both kicking and punching, then you have the ones that does throws, some do grappling. Some martial arts is very practical, some are not. So it depends on your goal.

Are you doing this for self defense? Then the best ones would be, Krav Maga. This is a discipline crafted out of a combination of different arts and created by the Israeli strictly for self defense. There's no beauty in it, the movements are geared for practical day to day combat situation. No rules, just flat out hurt the opponent, and put him out of commission

Are you doing this to compete? Do you like full contact or not? Karate, Muay Thai, kick boxing, Savate, boxing , all offers full contact tournaments.

All of traditional martial arts fall into 2 big categories, disciplines that primarily relies on strikes and those that relies on grappling.

Striking disciplines are those like Karate, Tae Kwan Do, Wu Shu, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, Silat, Capoeira, Boxing etc.

Grappling includes, wrestling, Judo, Ai Ki Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Jiu Jitsu, etc.

Then you have those, like Tai Chi and Qigong, that is primarily used for health. They are still martial arts, and if you learn it properly you can use it for fighting. But they're not very practical, you can't take a Tai Chi class for a month and hope to use it to fight.

Martial Arts Stretches : Types of Martial Arts Stretches

What different types of martial arts are there?

There's about six different types of fighting ranges. They are: Throwing range, weapon range, leg striking range, hand striking range, grappling/throwing range, and ground-grappling.

As for the number of arts that encompass all of those: Hundreds of thousands. There's new ones being made every year, and of the probably at least 10,000 base martial arts: There's between one and 1000 different variations for each. It's endless. Here some I will name, and this isn't even a fraction of them all:

Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Jujutsu, Iaido, Kenjutsu, Judo, Taijitsu/To Shin Do/Bujinkan/Budo/Nipo (AKA "Ninjutsu"), systema, sambo, Yaw Yan, Shuai Chiao, Wing Chun, Hapkido, Kyukido, Kobudo, Kail, Escrima, Capoeira, BJJ/GJJ, Pankration, Chun Kuk Do, Hwar Do, Kuk Sool Won, TaeKyon Yong Chul Do, Aikido, Kempo, Boxing, Kickboxing (Muay Thai and Yaw Yan are in a world of their own).....

Of those styles, there's various sub-styles within them. That's still just a fraction.

One Response to “Types Of Martial Arts”

  1. Martial Arts participants do not get belts for anything other than then being there and having the ability to accurately following the forms.

At least till the black belt, I think there MAY be other things involved in the later belts, not sure though.

Anyway, my point is not to take anything from anyone who currently is or has advanced through a martial arts program (because the students are definatly gaining VAST skills in leverage, a greater ability to defend themselves, the people they care about and even the general population. They also get great physical benefits in strength, agility and cardiovascular health, and that is doing something totally priceless for themselves and the enjoyment of their life) my point is to say that although the smart, wise and thoughtful side of most martial arts is usually posted and recited, it is not what gets you to advance to the next level. Someone can learn and recite the words without ever really having to demonstrate or even understand them.

To one person the highest level of honor could be to defend the defenseless or simply not take advantage of the defenseless themselves. While the next persons highest level of honor could be to never let someone who saw them be dishonorable live to tell about it, thereby protecting their own honor.

Also I think that it is pretty easy for a bully to go through a program like that and not get or care about the messages that are told to them. A bully only respects power, and in a martial arts class it would seem very clear who has the power, just look at the belt. Higher belt than me has more power than me and I must respect them, lower belt than me has less power than me and they must respect me but I can not push that too far in front of the ones who have more power than me. I will exert my power away from the martial arts school where I will not get called on for my thug like behavior.

I have no doubt that good and bad people both, have passed through all types of martial arts.

I think it is more important to focus on improving yourself than to focus on being better than everyone else. Even if everyone else practices an inferior martial art ;p
