I've been researching local tournaments for my master and have come across one with SKITA Rules. I have found the rule book but I am a bit confused on some of the uniform rules, is there anywhere I can go to see example photos? Also the weapons rules are a bit vague are padded weapons allowed or do all weapons have to be solid wood? While I understood the sparring rules what I'm confused on is if additional sparring gear is allowed (i.e. shin pads, chest guards)?
Also if there is anyone with personal experience with a SKITA tournament, I would love to hear your review (whether positive or negative).
(additional info: this particular tournament is associated with the National Blackbelt League (NBL), I would also like to hear reviews on the NBL)

Looking at the uniform requirement in section 1 (forms II-IV) SKITA -5, it looks like a basic uniform requirement. The weapons uniform requirement is the same as forms. The difference comes in the self-defense area where uniforms are not required at all unless you are participating in a division.
Uniforms must be clean and in good repair. No offensive language can be on the uniform. A basic martial art uniform can be found on any martial art uniform website.
In the weapons division. All weapons must be real. No practice weapons (plastic or foam) are allowed. All weapons have to have a dull non-cutting blade. The player will be disqualified if the weapon is sharpened.
The player must use the weapon they are being graded for. Prop-Players may use other weapons which meet the same criteria as above.
For sparring. The uniform is the same as above. A traditional uniform with the exception that no metal can be on the uniform. So no snaps or metal in a patch. The legs of the uniform must come below the knees. Sleeves must extend below the elbow. Again this describes a basic uniform.
The safety equipment minimum is Mouth Piece, Groin Cup, Hand Gear, Foot Gear, Head Gear. Pay attention to the brands allowed. Rheemax, Macho, ProForce, Shihan, and Tiger Claw only. Century martial arts gear would not be allowed according this document.
This to our understanding is a minimum requirement to participate. Other padding maybe allowed, it would be strange not to allow additional padding so long as it did not interfere with competition. We would take the additional gear and request a judgement on its use at the tournament.
Hopes this helps,
The Lake Charles Martial Arts Team

I've been doing taekwondo for seven years and just recently relocated and started training with the WTF. Super stoked about it, but my current sparring gear isn't WTF approved so I'm in need of new gear. I know most adidas gear is approved, but my question is whether or not its ALL approved? Don't want to spend too much money and end up getting the wrong gear. Any advice is great! Thanks!
Primarily, on certain WTF dojang, an Instructor has some gear provided with enough price to pay with and such are being approved already by WTF committee, but if your had been buy outside the dojang then better to approach your Instructor to relieve your main concern.

Taekwondo Sparring Gear Is the hogu (body armour) really neccessary?
I love sparring both in judo and in taekwondo, but I hate dressing up for matches in taekwondo. The gear I hate wearing most is the body armour/hogu (for pic see here:http://www.ask.com/wiki/Hogu). I mean, I don't like the groin guard either, but I can see why its needed (obviously!). However, the hogu seems big and bulky and useless? I know, I will get kicked in the stomach if I don't wear it...but then, I always get kicked in ITF matches too (albeit it is only light to medium contact).
My question is, will not wearing the hogu during practice result in broken bones or anything? Is it really neccessary?!
Thanks
Do you really want to get round-housed in the ribs without one on?

Taekwondo Sparring Gear How dangerous is muay thai?
I am not going to be competing in tournaments or anything, I'm only going to be doing the classes.
Anyway how dangerous are the classes? How often will you break bones?
How dangerous is the sparring in class? How often do you spar in class? Do you wear gear while sparring in class? What gear?
P.S. I am athletic and I am proficient in taekwondo(only did it for 4 months but I reached the 5th belt( I skipped a belt )
We tested once a month.
People like to be able to train. you can't train if you have a broken bone or any serious injury. If someone is causing injuries will anyone want to train with them? no. If you aren't training are you turning up and paying your fees or getting your moneys worth? no, so the instructor will try to keep everyone safe and healthy too.
Because martial arts is about inflicting injuries people are very aware of the risks and have done everything they can to minimise any risk.
You are more likely to get hurt doing pretty much any other sport.
For sparring you can wear shin guards, groin protector, chest protector, headguard, gumshield, elbow pads. depending on level of sparring and sex.
I have never picked up an injury during Thai boxing classes

TaeKwonDo Sparring Match
taekwondo-padding or no padding?
when you compete or spar in practice, you have to wear protection and gear and everything. a couple days ago, my friend was dissing me-saying that i shouldn't wear protection b/c in the real world i won't have any if i get into a fight. should i still wear it? i know i can get seriously injured but what my friends say really makes a difference. and im confused. help?
Your friend is a moron. Period. Why do you train? My guess would be self defense, exercise, you find it interesting, etc.
Your friend doesn't train with you. How would your instructor feel about going pad-less? I grew up with rules that we had to follow from our instructor and they were not debatable. If we went behind his back or fought on our own outside of class, or picked a fight with anyone at school or elsewhere, we knew that the next fight we would have would be against him; and pain was going to be experienced.
I say ask your instructor. If your instructor tells you to pay no attention to the judgments of someone outside of the class, then I guess you have a good teacher with more in his head than rocks. If he tells you to listen, or to "kick their ass", then you probably need a new teacher.
