Kids Martial Arts Classes in Mesa, AZ
I'm very annoyed with martial art schools?
I was looking at a tae kwan do martial art school with children who were supposedly 2nd dan black belt. They had twenty year olds who were 6th dan black belt! I hate this kind of thing so much and to make this a question can someone tell me the requirements of grading above the black belt level. I swear for one of the black belt levels you need to be 60 years of age or training in the martial art for art for at least 40 years.
Thank you
My perspective, for a 10 year old to achieve a 2nd degree black belt is almost impossible, they are too immature to be able to attain such a high skill level is such a small amount of time. They probably started at 7 years old, go once a week, and they have a 2nd dan black belt. It's ridiculous..
Korean martial arts copied the rank/belt system used by the Japanese and Okinawans. Then they began to change things for profit. Here is the way it was traditionally.
Traditionally in Japan, the minimum age for black belt was 16 years of age. The reason was simple. A boy was not considered a man until he turned 16. The term Shodan does not mean 1st degree black belt. It means 1st (Sho), Man (Dan). The Japanese felt that one must be mature enough to be a black belt. Children were rarely ever allowed to train until a few years ago.
For rank promotion the rules were strict for many years traditional Japanese arts used something similar to this as guidelines.
NOTE: the time in grade is from one rank to the next. It is not counted from how long you have trained, but from one rank to the next. That means that if it takes longer to reach a belt rank you don't get to test for the next rank sooner. Here is the age time requirements as they should be:
RANK / MINIMUM TIME IN GRADE / MINIMUM AGE
Shodan / 1st dan / 3-5 years (or more) of training / 16
Nidan / 2nd dan / 2 years / 18
Sandan / 3rd dan / 3 years / 21
Yondan / 4th dan / 4 years / 25
Godan / 5th dan / 5 years / 30
Ranks above 5th dan are considered honorary ranks in many styles.
NOTE: these ages are the minimums. In reality it was rare that anyone got to the ranks at those ages. Most black belts were already 21 years old or older. Since the time in grade is not cumulative, you still had to wait the required time before testing for the next rank. In other words if you reached black belt at 18, you still had to wait at least two years before being allowed to test for second degree.
NOTE: Titles are separate from ranks. No one can be issued a Sensei title below the rank of Nidan. Sensei is usually reserved for Sandan or above, but many may be Sandan or above and not be issued the title.
The minimum to be considered a master is Yondan. However, many arts do not give the title below Godan or Rokudan. Not everyone is awarded the title. Titles are always separate from ranks. If they are awarded, it is done by the head of the organization.
My answer/comments are not meant to put you or anyone down. They are here simply to set the record straight. The problems with legitimate martial artists, ranks, titles have all come due to abuse or ignorance of these standards.
************
EDIT:
according to Black belt magazine in the late 1960's less than 3% of all martial arts students ever reached black belt. Of those that did less than 50% of them ever made it to second degree black. None of them were children.
EDIT:
Kwon Kris You mentioned the ATA Tae Kwon Do schools... They are some of the worst McDojo out there. But you mentioned them being easy targets ate tournaments. I wish that was true. They would be easy targets if they would compete in regular tournaments. The ATA has their own tournaments. They do not allow ATA members to compete in other tournaments. They also don't allow non ATA members to compete in their tournaments. That is one way the keep their students. They don't want to be embarrassed so they keep their students on a tight leash.
EDIT:
Rebel...... I Hope you don't believe that statement about being able to fight multiple attackers to be equal to a set black belt rank. The idea that say a third dan should be able to defeat 3 attackers is ludicrous.
