Boxing Training With a DVD - 5 Things to Look for When Choosing a Boxing Workout DVD
This article has 5 things to look for when choosing an authentic fitness boxing workout DVD.
Walk into your local sports and you will find hundreds of sets of boxing gloves, punch mitts (a.k.a focus pads), and punching bags. However, there are hardly any authentic DVDs to show you how to use this equipment, let alone give you a good workout.
Most of the DVDs available are aerobics style. In other words, they are done to a music beat, shadow boxing, without any boxing equipment. Think Jane Fonda, with a few air punches and kicks thrown in.
Now this may be exactly what you are looking for - an aerobics DVD, without punching a boxing bag or punch mitts. But what happens if you want an authentic workout where you actually punch the pads/mitts with a partner at home. Or perhaps you want to train with a punching bag in your garage. You need a DVD that guides you through all this. Before buying, here's a checklist to consider.
Look for a DVD that shows you how to use actual boxing equipment. Authentic fitness boxing training is not box-aerobics. You want to learn to use your boxing equipment right? For example, if it's punch mitts you've got (a.k.a focus pads), you need to learn how to hold them, how to punch them and what combos to use. Many people do not know how to hold punch mitts. When I teach and accredit Personal Trainers in how to deliver authentic mitt work for their clients, the first thing I do is correct their holding positions for the jab, cross, uppercut, hook and then the combos. If they hold them too wide their boxer /client punches too wide, resulting in poor results and an unsafe workout for both partners.
Look for a DVD that is taught by someone with a background in authentic fitness boxing. The problem with many kickboxing, boxing or martial arts DVDs is they are taught by Personal Trainers or Fitness Instructors without a background in the sport. Selecting the right DVD is just like selecting the right martial arts or boxing class. Find someone with experience, friendliness and someone who can explain things clearly and simply. When I say experience, I mean someone who has already given actual results to others.
Look for a DVD that understands the dangers involved in a Kick Boxing and Boxing Workouts. Boxing & kickboxing, even for fitness, are impact sports, with a lot of power generated into the mitt or bag. Also, anyone who has taught a fitness boxing workout to a large group knows it can be a handful, with different size partners, beginners etc. It's even more difficult when taught via a DVD or MP3 because the Trainer is not actually present. Proper mitt and pad holding technique needs to be explained to the viewer before the workout kicks off.
Look for a DVD that shows you authentic combinations. Too many "boxing" DVDs are just Jab Jab Jab Jab...you get the idea. But if you're going to really get fit you need some combinations (or combos). Why? Because the more punches you throw, the fitter you will get. Endless straight punches gets boring - it's combos that bring your workouts alive. For example, Double Left Jab, Right, Left Hook, Right (L,L,R,LH,R) is a great 5 punch combo, that real boxers use. Combos or are a test of skill, speed and fitness.
Look for a DVD you can grow into. Most people can manage a L,R (Left Jab, Right Cross) combination into the punch mitts, However a L,R,LU,R,LH,R combo is not so simple. It's important the dvd you select starts with the basics then "adds on" more advanced punches and combinations that you can grow into. If it goes too fast, you can always pause or slow-mo the DVD.

I can't stand, especially at my high school, kids who walk around with TapouT and Affliction clothes and talk alot acting like their some big tough person yet in reality they never picked up a glove or trained for a minute in their life. I'm not saying this pertains to everyone, but there are a few who do it and it just irks me, I train my butt off and even then rarely wear fighting clothes yet they walk around like future UFC stars. Anyone else get annoyed with this too?
Are you serious? I never claimed to be anything, just an amateur fighter who ACTUALLY fights and does stuff unlike the people who "claim" to be fighters yet wouldn't last one minute in the cage. And no, I would easily beat you, regardless of size
MMA in general is annoying. If everyone would realize it is a sport not a martial art it would help.
What I find truly annoying is the posters on here that claim "MMA is a mixture of all the arts"
MMA is a sport that was created as a fair and reasonably realistic competition for martial Artist from various styles to compete against each other. Not as an art itself. If MMA was, as some put forth, an art comprised of parts of many other arts it would be a Hybrid art and all MMA schools would teach essentially the same thing and same mix. they do not. Most "MMA" schools do take moves from different styles and put them together in ways to fit into a sport, designed solely for the ring. they tend to leave out the mental component of the arts. Now to the proponents of this mishmash of moves, most of the top stars signed to the big promoters of MMA( UFC, Pride, etc) that stay top competitors for very long studied one style to a high level, then later picked up a second style that covered what they felt their weak area was more thoroughly than their base style.

MMA 101 – The Five Things You Must Bring to Your First MMA Training Session
So you are ready to start your MMA training… You've already been learning from the best fighters in the world on TapouT Virtual Training Center, and now you're going to take those skills and use them in an actual gym for the first time.
But before you head to the gym, I want to make sure that you are fully and completely prepared. There have been so many times that I have seen someone walk into the gym that I train at for the first time, ready to get their training on, only to be limited in their first class because they didn't bring the proper gear. I want you to get the most out of every second of your gym time, so don't let that guy be you!
Most MMA gyms should have basic sparring gear like gloves and head gear, and while I would recommend eventually picking those things up for yourself, there is no need to break the bank on them when you're first starting out. What you will need are the five items that I have put together in this handy checklist below.
You can pick up all of these items for less than $100 total, and they'll last you for years during your training.
1) Mouthguard
Dental work is expensive, mouth guards are cheap
Having a mouthguard (also called a mouthpiece) is absolutely non-negotiable when you are doing any sort of contact mma training at the gym, and it is the number-one thing that new students don't have or forget to bring.
Wearing a mouthguard protects your teeth from getting knocked out, your tongue from getting bitten, and it allows you to keep your jaw clenched while sparring, which helps prevent you from getting knocked out and keeps your jaw from getting broken. A lot of guys I train with think you only need a mouthguard when you are throwing strikes, but I have seen more mouth injuries from accidental head butts during grappling than I ever have in actual sparring sessions. No matter what kind of training you're doing, if you are working with a partner, your mouthguard should be in.
Remember, dental work is long, expensive and painful. A mouthpiece is cheap and takes less than a second to put in. Which one would you rather have?
TapouT sells an excellent line of affordable mouthguards, or you can pick one up at just about any sporting goods store. Just make sure that you buy a single-sided mouthguard, as opposed to the double-sided ones that some people use in football. These allow you to breathe a little easier out of your mouth and won't come with a hook that protrudes out of your mouth (which lets football players attach their mouthpiece to their helmet). Also be sure to follow the molding instructions that will come with your mouthguard BEFORE your first training session. Using an unmolded mouthguard will not protect you nearly as much as a molded one will.
2) Fight shorts
Stylish, durable, and they won't fall down
When you are training for MMA, the last thing that you want is for your clothes to be a hindrance. Baggy basketball shorts might look cool, but they get caught easily when you are grappling, make it harder to throw kicks, and have a greater chance of getting pulled down while you're wrestling. And let me tell you, there is nothing more embarrassing than trying to defend a double leg takedown while your pants are sliding down your butt.
I have two preferred types of shorts that I wear when I train. Board shorts and fight shorts are made with a thick polyester that is durable and won't rip during grappling. Most board shorts also have a draw string, so you can keep them tight even after you shed a few pounds. Again, TapouT has a great selection of board shorts and fight shorts, and while they might be a little pricier than the cheap gym shorts that you can find in a department store, you'll make up the difference in the quality and durability.
If you want something that offers you even more mobility, compression shorts won't get caught on anything and do not give your opponent anything to grab onto. Compression shorts are the preferred attire for our competition team for that exact reason.
Even if you are wearing fight shorts, I would recommend wearing compression shorts underneath them. Fight shorts have a tendency to ride up during grappling, especially when you are on your back, and having compression shorts underneath will keep you from feeling exposed.
3) Athletic shirt
The type of shirt that you wear to MMA training is a matter of personal preference, and some people prefer not to wear a shirt at all. Just know that if you are doing any sort of grappling or wrestling, there is a decent chance that the shirt you are wearing is going to get stretched and possibly ripped. Because of that, I prefer a durable workout shirt specifically designed to be worn when training for MMA, or a tight-fitting compression shirt that can't get grabbed.
My personal preference is to wear a sleeveless shirt, which feels cooler and doesn't give my opponent any handle when they are fishing for arm drags and triangle chokes.
4) Athletic cup
You'll thank us
The Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts requires competitors to use three pieces of equipment; a mouthguard, 4 oz. gloves, and a cup. And while groin strikes are not legal like they used to be, accidents can still happen, and you will be thankful that you are wearing your cup when they do.
You would think that after the first time you got hit in the groin, the pain would be enough to ensure that you always wear your cup, but I am amazed at how many guys continue to risk life and limb — okay, that's maybe a slight exaggeration — even after they've been floored by a groin shot multiple times in their training career.
Why risk it? At some point in your training, you WILL get hit in the groin. After you spend enough time in the gym, it simply becomes a law of averages. And when that day does come, I want you to think back to this article, and thank TapouT Virtual Training Center for saving you some serious pain.
5) Hand wraps
Always protect your hands
Your hand and wrist are made up of 27 small bones, which means that every time you land a punch on a bag or opponent, those 27 bones absorb a significant amount of force.
Hand injuries are surprisingly debilitating. At their worst, hand injures can actually keep you out of competition or sideline you from training for an extended period of time. At the very least, they are uncomfortable and can make any sort of MMA activity painful and uncomfortable.
Wearing proper training gloves protect your hand to an extent, but hand wraps will provide support for your wrist and keep the bones in your hand compressed and tight, which limits the chance of a break.
Hand wraps come in a variety of lengths, but you should look for a pair that are at least 170 inches long. This gives you enough fabric to tightly wrap the wrist and knuckles multiple times, which will add more protection and allow for a sturdier wrap.
Your coaches should be able to teach you how to wrap your hands properly, and websites like Youtube are a great source of instruction. Or if you want to learn from the best, the TapouT Virtual Training Center has hand wrap lessons from Jacob ‘Stitch' Duran, the best cornerman in all of MMA.
Martial Arts Training Equipment Mats for martial arts slipping under my feet?
I have mats in the garage that i use for my training. Real martial arts mats are too expensive for me so i got the cheap ones from Walmart that are used for gym equipment. The thing is, when I try something too fast, such as maybe an aerial kick, the mat slips under me. Any suggestions?
You need something to provide friction for the mat, so it sticks to the ground and doesn't just start floating away.
Putting a sort of friction high substance under the mat, and anchoring it to some kind of spike or heavy object at 4 corners would do it.
There are those detachable strips which stick together really hard due to some kind of micro filament fiber technology. You can buy those and slap them on the mat and then stick them down into the ground, assuming the ground has the necessary surface area for you to stick it on.

Getting All You Can Out of Your Mixed Martial Arts Training
To get good at mixed martial arts, you have to train in various ways and work hard. The best MMA fighters train in various different techniques and ways. Use the following tips and strategies to improve your MMA skills and to get more out of your training.
The right clothes and equipment is a good idea if you're really serious about your mixed martial arts training.
This means getting gloves and head guards as well as comfortable training clothes. By themselves these items won't make you a better fighter, but they help by allowing you to focus more and help you feel more professional. Serious competitors can be identified most often by the commitment represented in their specialized clothing and equipment. It can also help to have the right training equipment at home, such as weights, jump rope or an exercise machine for when you aren't at the gym. It can be important to pick up equipment when you can as it can help you make faster progress in your MMA training.
When practicing at a mixed martial arts gym or martial arts school, be sure to train with a variety of people. Make a point of training with those who are more experienced and skillful than you. Be careful that you don't train with those at the same level or lower in an effort to maintain control. Those who are at a higher level than you will help you improve the most. They've been where you are, so if you're respectful and show them you're willing to learn, they will most likely be willing to help you. Sparring with other skilled martial artists will show you the areas that you need to improve on. To help take your skills to the next level, training with better fighters is a great option.
You should train mercilessly if you want to meet your goals in mixed martial arts, but you also need some down time. Every individual has his or her own level of resilience, however it is crucial for you to take a break at least once or twice every week. If you overtrain, you risk injuries and might burn yourself out. It is vital for you to give your body some mending time, as it needs to build itself back up again. This is a principle that applies to all sports and conditioning.
If you want to get faster, stronger and have better techniques, train as much as you can, but take regular rest days as well. This will let you go farther as time passes and transform you into a greater MMA competitor. You won't progress in mixed martial arts without plenty of time and effort. Work out as hard as you can but be careful so you can avoid as many injuries as possible. You can begin to see greater improvement to your MMA skills with these tips.

Boxing Gloves - Which Ones Do YOU Need?
Boxing gloves have been around since the sport started. They can be found throughout history and have been used by many different cultures and many different styles of fighting. Most people think that gloves are used to soften the blows and protect the person getting punched but they are acutely there to protect your hands.
First things first. Where are you going to put it? This can be a big problem for some people. Not everyone has a bunch of free space in their home, or apartment. If your getting one for your gym then space is most likely not an issue.
Your hand are made up of many small bones, ligaments and tendons and constant unprotected abuse can quickly damage all of those internal parts. It is not that they are fragile but constant abuse can really do some damage. You are going to need protection. In boxing your hands are your weapons and if you do not protect them, then your boxing career will be short lived.
So what kind of gloves do YOU need? Well that all depends on what you are going to be doing. There are several different types and each one can be used for something different. If you are trying to increase your upper body strength then a good pair of weighted gloves are what you need. They can provide one heck of a cardio workout. They have built in weights and some brands have weights that can be added or removed to help work out the muscles in your arms and upper body.
If you are a boxer in training then you are going to need an excellent pair of training gloves. These will help keep your thumbs and fist in the correct position and avoid injury. If you are practicing your martial arts then you most likely want sparring gear made especially for martial arts. Martial arts sparring gear will also come with padded head gear and foot pads.
Then you have MMA or Mixed Martial Arts. There are gloves made just for this type of fighting. They are called MMA gloves. This style of gloves is smaller and allows the use of your fingers for grappling moves and hair pulling. Just kidding about the hair pulling.;) Do you have a heavy bag that you like to take some aggression out on? It can be a great way to exercise your upper body and stay fit. You might want to look over the heavy bag gloves, they are made just for this purpose.
What if you just happen to love the color pink? Well if you do then you are in luck because you can also find great boxing gloves that are pink and even some that are purple. As you can see there are quite a few different types of boxing gloves and they all have their own unique purposes. Make sure you get the correct ones and keep your hands protected.
