How would you feel for the Boston University med student who killed those women?

I think the guy was losing his mind, but it's really really a shame that he deserved to be entitled as an enemy of the Boston republic.

in my opinion, the whole situation is pretty messed up.

Despite holding a part-time job, college freshman Laura (the stunning Deborah Francois of The Page Turner) is unable to make ends meet. Having run out of options and desperate for cash, she answers an Internet ad: "Joe, 57, seeks female student for tender moments. One hundred euros an hour." Just this once, she promises herself. Three days later, Laura is in a hotel room with "Joe," and the downward spiral begins. By her second customer, however, Laura already wants to stop. Will she be able to? According to one student association, there are 40,000 young women in France who work as occasional prostitutes, including the anonymous author of the notorious memoir on which this film is based. From uncompromising writer-director Emmanuelle Bercot (Clement), Student Services is as compelling as it is shocking.

Practice Drills for Japanese Swordsmanship (Paperback)

Practice Drills for Japanese Swordsmanship (Paperback)

$12.76

To become an expert swordsman, one must pay close attention to detail, be highly self-critical, and practice diligently every day under the guidance of a good teacher. Unfortunately, contact time with a worthy mentor is limited for most. Practice Drills for Japanese Swordsmanship fills this obvious gap in the training of the modern swordsman by providing bokuto (wooden sword) drills to supplement the formal class activity of forms practice. Both single and two-person drills are presented, some common to iaido and kenjutsu, others extracted from iaido forms by the author and used to teach his own students the proper ways of drawing, parrying, and cutting. Each drill is illustrated with step-by-step drawings to help students hone their techniques; together they provide a comprehensive system of general skills development for anyone interested in using the Japanese sword.

Aikido Exercises for Teaching and Training (Paperback)

Aikido Exercises for Teaching and Training (Paperback)

$13.43

With the number of Aikido dojos in the U.S. estimated at up to 1,000, this Japanese martial art has never been more popular. This revised edition of the best-selling Aikido Exercises for Teaching and Training provides an ideal companion for both teachers and students of all Aikido systems. With over 100 illustrations and 300 pages of detailed techniques and exercises, Aikido Exercises for Teaching and Training has proved itself as the definitive guide to the "peaceful martial art." The exercises here are based on hitori waza, the simple building blocks that underlie the most spectacular Aikido throws. These are augmented with testing techniques, class demonstrations, and underlying basics of physics, anatomy, and psychology. The book includes an explanation of the relationships between exercises and throws; an approach for safe mastery of rolling and ukemi skills; the anatomy of wristlocks; useful training equipment; exercises for individual, off-mat practice; and verbal self-defense techniques. Unlike most Aikido manuals, this one draws from multiple systems (including Aikikai and Yoshinkan Aikido as well as Judo) and many seemingly unrelated topics to enhance understanding of the underlying principles of Aikido. Peppered with humorous anecdotes, creative analogies, and real-life lessons, this is a practical and inspiring guide for all Aikidoists.

Learning the Japanese Language

"IMPOSSIBLE," you say? Not necessarily. Why, if you think about it you may already know some words in Japanese, such as kimono and sake (rice wine)! Did you know that if you say the English pronoun "I," it sounds as if you are saying "love" in Japanese (ai)? Or that if you say "cow" in English, the same pronunciation means "to buy" in Japanese (kau)?

Some claim that a person can learn Japanese overnight merely by poring over a 'How-to-Learn' book. Though it is not quite that easy, one can quickly master enough Japanese to have an enjoyable time visiting Japan as a tourist.

From Where?

Even more complicated than the Japanese language itself are various ideas regarding its origin. Two decades ago, Leptcha, a language spoken in a valley of the Himalaya mountains, was found to be closely related to Japanese. Others claim that Japanese bears greater affinity to Korean than to any other language.

What is the relationship between Japanese and Chinese? Due to the use of Chinese ideographic script, which we call "Kanji," Japanese is often thought to have close connections with Chinese. But the differences are considerable. Chinese is a "monosyllabic" language, containing words of only one syllable. Japanese, however, is "polysyllabic," having numerous words of two or more syllables. In Chinese, word meaning is conveyed by pitch and word order, while in Japanese the meaning is conveyed by the words themselves and by the word endings.

Nearly 2,500 years ago, the Japanese language had, basically, the same grammar as that used today. But by the end of the ninth and tenth centuries, changes began taking place. This made it necessary to know one set of words for reading and another set for speaking. The result was that until the end of World War II, one had to know 3,000 to 5,000 Chinese characters and two sets of syllabaries of 50 characters each in order to read any weighty material.

Since 1945, however, the essential Kanji have been somewhat simplified and reduced to a little less than 2,000. The language also has adopted many English words. Nowadays, besides these Kanji characters, schoolchildren are taught two sets of romanization. This requires hours of work at memorizing as well as writing practice until, by the end of grammar school, children have learned 881 Kanji, and, by the end of high school, 1,850. Reading college textbooks, however, requires knowledge of about 3,000 Kanji.

Let's Say Something in Japanese

Perhaps you are anxious to test your ability at speaking Japanese. The pronunciation is easy enough, as there are, basically, only 50 different sounds possible. What presents the biggest problem is grammar. But for now, we'll stick to simpler matters.

To begin with, there are five vowel sounds, all pronounced as in Italian: A as in far, I as e in me, E as in nest, O as in old, U as in push, when the U is a short vowel; when long, the U is as oo in soon. It is very important to learn the short and the long vowel sounds. A rather frequent mistake made by missionaries is confusing so shi ki (organization) with sM shi ki (funeral). Not a few audiences have been shocked at hearing about God's great heavenly funeral, rather than God's great heavenly organization. Another easy mistake is that of calling a young girl shM jM (orangutan) rather than shM jo (young girl). Clearly, both the learner of Japanese and the listener are benefited by having a sense of humor.

Often the same vowel, or phonetic sound, is used consecutively, as in a ta ma (head), ko ko ro (heart), or to ko ro (place). Sometimes a phonetic sound is lost through contraction when saying certain words. For instance, when pronouncing kM fu ku (happy), one drops the middle u and slurs the f and k together. This results in the pronunciation kM f'ku. Practice saying it several times and you will see how easily the Japanese rolls off your tongue! Another basic word is the pronoun "I," which in Japanese is wa ta ku shi. It is pronounced correctly wa ta k'shi, with the loss of a u and the slurring of the k into the shi sound. In recent years "I" has been still further abbreviated to become wa ta shi.

Consonants can be tricky too. For example, the single-consonant "k" in the word kM ka gives us "school song," while the double consonant in the word kok ka makes it "national anthem."

Are there any rules as to which syllable should receive accent? Authorities differ, but some agree that it is better not to accent any syllable than to accent the wrong one. For example, the city of Numazu is pronounced nu ma zu, with equal emphasis on each syllable.

Especially since the seventeenth century, Japanese has borrowed many words from European languages. For instance, the Portuguese word "pao" (bread) becomes pan in Japanese. The Dutch "blik" (tin) is bu ri ki. "Butter" in English becomes ba ta. Another English word, "strike," expands to five syllables, with two different meanings. It is su to ra i ku in baseball jargon, but when some want better pay or working conditions, the word becomes su to ra i ki.

Other Things of Interest

One must realize that Japanese word order differs from that in most other languages. On a visit to Japan, you might say in English: "I would like to visit Mount Fuji." In Japanese you would say, "Watak'shi wa Fuji San o hMmon shitai desu." The literal word order is: "I Fuji Mount visit want." In Japanese the verb always comes at the end of the sentence. As noted above, verb endings are also most important. To know whether an expression is in the present or the past tense, or whether it is a positive or negative response to a previous question or statement, one must listen to the very last syllable of a sentence.

An unusual feature of the Japanese language is its system of honorifics or keigo. All conversations must take into consideration three things: the speaker, the one spoken to and the person spoken about. Besides these, the speaker must consider the respective positions, ages, belongings, families, friends and social groups embraced by the conversation. These factors affect-to name just a few-vocabulary, suffixes, prefixes and verb endings used in conversation. The pronoun "you," for example, is represented by many different Japanese words, according to the status of the person addressed. The polite way is often to use the person's name instead, or to omit the "you" altogether. One making one's residence in Japan should be determined to learn the various forms of address. The visitor on a temporary basis, however, will be forgiven blunders of this type. The Japanese, as a whole, are delighted to hear people make the effort to speak their difficult tongue.

Let's Read Kanji

Even though you may not know the correct pronunciation of a Kanji character, you often can know its meaning. Do not be afraid of what may appear at first sight to be "chicken scratches" all up and down a page. Although opinions vary, there is a fairly easy way to learn to read Kanji. This system of writing has, basically, 300 "building blocks." By combinations of these, all the thousands of Kanji are formed. Shall we try a few?

The character for ka wa (river) comes from the flowing river [Artwork-River Drawing] and looks like this [Artwork-River Drawing]. Now, if you squeeze that river [Artwork-River Drawing], what do you have but the character for water [Artwork-Japanese Characters], mi zu?

A traveler in Japan will find it helpful to know the characters for "entrance" and "exit" that are in train stations and other public places. First take a mouth [Artwork-Mouth Drawing], form it into [Artwork-Japanese Characters] and pronounce it ku chi. Now picture a small river running into a large river [Artwork-River Drawing], square it up [Artwork-Japanese Characters], and you have hai ru or iru, meaning "to enter." Put the two together [Artwork-Japanese Characters], smooth out the pronunciation, and you have the word for entrance, i ri gu chi, or, literally, 'enter mouth.' To leave the station, you must know another character. So think of a flower growing out of the ground [Artwork-Flower Drawing]. Shape it up a bit [Artwork-Japanese Characters], and you have the character for de ru (to leave). Put [Artwork-Japanese Characters] with [Artwork-Japanese Characters] and you have [Artwork-Japanese Characters], meaning 'coming out mouth,' or exit, pronounced de guchi. That wasn't nearly as hard as you expected, was it?

Many of the characters tell a story, as does the man [Artwork-Man Drawing] [Artwork-Japanese Characters], standing by a tree [Artwork-Tree Drawing], which becomes [Artwork-Japanese Characters]. The two together [Artwork-Japanese Characters] constitute the Kanji for vacation, pronounced ya su mi. How about a man leaning on a shovel [Artwork-Man Drawing], next to his horse [Artwork-Horse Drawing]? Put them together and you have e ki, or station [Artwork-Japanese Characters], as in "Tokyo Eki," where you can catch the bullet train.

There are many, many more to learn, and while requiring effort, it is a thoroughly fascinating and entertaining study. Over the years the writing of Kanji is being progressively simplified. As the older and younger generations differ in their way of writing Kanji, often a letter received from a grandmother or grandfather will have to be read and "translated" by someone living nearby who is in the same age group as the writer of the letter.

Some Reasons for Learning Japanese

There are many reasons that may prompt persons to learn Japanese. With some individuals, it may be simply a hobby that helps to broaden their views of people from a different culture and environment. Others will want to learn Japanese for business reasons. Tourists will enjoy their visit to Japan all the more if they know some basic Japanese. But to gain a real working knowledge of Japanese, one would have to live in this country for some years.

If you wish to learn Japanese, you can visit our site learn japanese. Our word of advice is: "Ganbatte kudasai!," that is, "Stick to it!"

Any oboe players who make their own reeds?

I want to learn how to make my own reeds. I buy hand-made reeds from a store that specializes in double reed instruments, but sometimes none of them work the way I'd like. I've tried contacting the woman who used to give me lessons but she won't help.

If you know how to make your own reeds, could you please tell me the best place to buy tools, wrapping string, wood, etc... Is there some sort of instructional video or detailed manual I can buy? Any little bit of info will help.

And PLEASE, if you are not an oboist, don't answer this! Unless you KNOW an oboist that makes their own reeds.

Thank you!

The Future of Music Instruction: Online Lessons

I'd like to start by saying that this article is long overdue…Over the past few years, I have discovered a new way of connecting to people that eliminated many of the problems we've faced by time and space-online virtual conferencing. Let me share my story:

My field of expertise, which is vocal instruction, requires that I make myself readily accessible and available for the needs of students striving for perfection. Most vocal coaches, or coaches of any type for that matter, set up shop in a teaching studio, music store, or even a corner office of their home. Yes, this includes myself as well. The after-launch protocol usually includes posting ads, listing the "teaching" business in the local phone book, and making local appearances, all for the sole purpose of driving attention to the teaching business. Local music instruction is an extremely valuable service for the surrounding 10-20 mile radius. But what if there were a way to expand your business to cover 57 million square miles (roughly the amount of land mass of the earth) all within the comfort of your own home? Would you do it? Or better yet, what if there were a way for a student to study with a teacher that lived on the other side of the earth, without the aid of three grand, a two-week vacation and priceline.com?

A friend of mine pondered the same question a few years back and invited me to answer this very question. This question was brought upon by our notoriety and success and led me down a road I had never thought to take…let me step back for a moment;

My notoriety as a vocal coach came out of nowhere in 2004 (roughly eight years after I started coaching), simply because of my insatiable thirst to help others learn the fine art of voice. I started teaching more, decided to write a book, and started a website and then things kind of took on a life of their own; let's just say I started attracting a little bit of attention as time progressed. Within two years of launching my site, I was an author of several books, and had made several appearances on shows like Discovery Channel's MythBusters. Needless to say, this spread my notoriety much further than the little town that I live in.

After my first TV show and first book were released, I began to receive many emails from singers around the world, asking me question after question…I was happy to help, but there are just so many hours in the day. I soon discovered I was basically giving "free" lessons via email to an over-abundance of hungry learners. I have a soft heart and tried to keep up with every person's questions, but it was becoming overwhelming and I couldn't continue spending hours as a free advice columnist. So I'd ask my hungry pen pals, "Why don't you just schedule a lesson with me?" Surprisingly enough, most responded pleasantly, telling me they would love to have one-on-one lessons with me, but considering they lived hours or continents away, it just was never going to happen.

Sure, I've had singers fly in from around the world from places such as Taiwan and France, but these were a chosen few. And who can blame them. Flying is expensive! There had to be another way. So, before I had even answered the question my comrade had presented, he answered it for me. He said "Ever heard of Skype?" I hadn't at the time, so he quickly introduced me. Apparently Skype was a new free online program that allowed you to talk with people over the Internet. You could even see them too! So, I signed up for my free account, dug my web cam out of the closet, and proceeded to chat with him online in real time via audio/video conferencing. WOW what a neat idea. He said "wouldn't it be neat to use this to teach voice online?" I agreed and was super excited about the whole prospect…Thirty-seven minutes later, we hung up, I ate lunch, and then I tossed the online conferencing idea in the "to-do" list in the back of my mind.

Fast-forward a year later. I figured my buddy was going to explode on the "online" scene, and though I wanted in on the action, I was honestly too lazy to pursue it. I'll admit, I am a late creeper with technology, and this Skype thing kind of scared me. One day, I asked him, "How goes the online biz?" Turns out, he canned it too. In fact, he said, "Hey, can you help ME get it together? I really want to teach online". Unfortunately, I was the wrong guy to ask for help. I guess we were both just too skeptical about the whole "online teaching" thing. We were both questioning the process- "would it really work, would someone want to study through a virtual camera, would there be connection problems, latency, dropped calling, etc. So it seemed we both threw in the towel and were waiting for the other to take the lead. Oh well, so much for that idea. But a funny thing happens when you are destined to accomplish something and give up on it. Things keep popping up in your life that lead you back on track…

I had continued receiving emails from people wanting their ‘vocal' questions answered, to which I replied, "book a lesson"…Right after my conversation with my friend about our failed idea, I started receiving some unusual replies to my "book your session" answer, "Okay, I'll book a lesson. Do you teach online?" I kept saying no, but those same replies kept pouring in. So what did I do? I caved, I lied, and I said YES. I even remember the first time I said yes. I was scared silly. Will it work? Will they be happy with their online lesson? Too late to worry now, time to jump off the deep end.

So he booked a lesson, we setup a time, and we both signed into Skype and gave it a whirl. If I can sum up that first lesson in one word, it would be "Freedom"; I have discovered the freedom to teach anywhere and everywhere and anytime I choose, all by using a computer and web cam! I believe that first lesson went on for about 90 minutes although I strictly told my client that it was a 45-minute session. Don't worry, I didn't charge him double, I offered the extra time all because I was so excited to use this new tool. (Hey but there are ways to charge by the minute, but that's one of my secrets. So much for a secret, I never use it, haha.) The lesson time flew by, I had a ball teaching, the student was thrilled, and since that time, we had at least several dozen lessons together. No doubt about it; I was hooked; I had finally found a workable answer for all of my email students:

"I live too far away".

"No problem, I teach online!"

A new era was born.

This was in 2007. Now the majority of my lessons are online. Why? The accessibility and ease of online lessons cannot be beat. I don't have to leave my house, and they don't have to leave theirs. Do online lessons work? Hmmm, ask singers of bands like Dream Theater or Thriving Ivory. Both have studied with me via web cam and both have told the world how it has helped.

Hear me now. Online instruction IS the wave of the future, although I know some of you are probably still not convinced. Heck, it took me over a year to become convinced. People are still worried if online instruction is as good as the real thing. Well, there is nothing as good as the real thing (in-person) but this comes pretty darned close. I know concerns arise such as will you be able to see or hear the person, and will there be any latency issues (lag in time). The answer is Yes and No. Yes you could have audio/video/latency issues, but if you have a high-speed connection, whether it is a cable connection to your PC/MAC or an air-card for your laptop, a decent web cam, microphone, and headset, then you should be good to go. (Psst-I'd focus more on the quality of what is being taught as opposed to the technological side. But finding the right coach is the subject of another article.)

Bottom line; technology is getting better every day. Thanks to programs like Google Chat, you can jam live with your instructor in almost seamless real time. There are other programs besides Skype that work well too such as MSN Messenger, Oovoo, Tokbox, etc. And with each passing day, the technology gets better and better.

So if you are wondering if online lessons will work for you, I've done told you my answer- online instruction IS the wave of the future. In fact, I believe in it so much that I, along with several partners, have created an online teaching platform at rocksource360.com, where musicians can study guitar, bass, voice, keys, drums, etc. with real rock stars. Every rock star we bring on board has come to me with the exact same concerns, and as soon as I show them how seamlessly online teaching works, they are hooked for life, just as I was. If you want to expand you music career, you need to invest in yourself, so I urge you to find you an online coach and invest in your future!

Is it absolutely out of the question to wear contact lenses in Marine Corps basic training?

The difference in the strength of my left and right eye require me to wear contacts in order for me to have depth perception. I know they make you wear BC glasses but I was wondering if there was a waiver to allow contacts or what the reasoning against them was.
Also, due to the nature of this condition, I can't wear glasses and have worst eye sight and no depth perception without the lenses. I either can't go to basic or I will do horridly at many of the exercises. Is there hope for me in the Corps?

No. Contacts are too prone to causing irritation and infections. In boot camp you will not always have the time to properly clean them and maintain their cleanliness. Pink eye is a big problem already without people having contacts. There are too many germs and problems without contact to merit someone wearing them. Sorry, but you will be better off without them.

A man with the poser to see the dead attempts to discern whether his newfound ability is a curse or a blessing in this independent supernatural thriller from directors Hank Stone and Roy Kurtluyan. Jake McCormick was the victim of a college prank gone horribly awry. After awakening from a twelve year coma, he realizes that he has somehow developed a unique ability that could destroy him if he fails to harness it properly. Jake can see the dead, but without the skills of a proper clairvoyant he's ill equipped to cope with the ability to communicate with the dead. Assaulted with a horrifying barrage of intense nightmares and bombarded with restless spirits, Jake enlists the aid of gifted medium Andrea Riley in hopes that she possesses the key to teaching him to transform a perceived affliction into something positive. Together, Jake and Andrea come to the conclusion that Jake is a conduit to the afterlife - a rare Point of Contact between the mortal realm and the spirit world. Perhaps with a little training, Jake can learn to use his powers to track down evil spirits and send them screaming back to the netherworld. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Maximize the Output at Your Contact Center

Contact centers have become central to the survival and success of any business.  They have assumed dynamic roles in the form of call centers, customer service centers and help desks. Being a critical component of customer relationship management (CRM), contact centers have become the hub of customer-oriented activities.

With growing demand, contact centers have to manage multiplying challenges. Growing business operations can hamper a contact center's productivity and efficiency, resulting into loss of business. For example, contact center ABC handles customer service operations for company XYZ. Now, as XYZ expands its business and customer base, ABC has to manage an increased number of customer calls, while maintaining high quality services and faster response time. Thus, in an accelerating business environment, every contact center has to find ways to maximize its output in terms of both quantity and quality.

Improving Core Capabilities at a Contact Center

The volume of calls and customer satisfaction graph are vital for the performance of a contact center. To increase customer satisfaction, a contact center must ascertain that no call goes unanswered. An unanswered call leads to a bad reputation for the company. Another important factor is the customer experience during a call. This is made up of different factors, such as a simplified process, call waiting time, responsiveness and query resolution. Poor experience can drive customers to the client's competitors. On the other hand, if the customer experience is pleasing, the volume of calls will automatically increase in a period of time.

At the heart of improving core capabilities, there are two most important factors to consider:

Technology: Installing high end technology infrastructure solves several of the above mentioned challenges. A sophisticated interactive voice response (IVR) system, server support and dedicated software can multiply the customer experience without any manual effort.

Managing the process: The contact center process involves numerous elements, such as the call routing method, managing customer profiles, pre-recorded message menu and query resolution strategy. The success or failure of any contact center depends on how comprehensively the process is defined. It helps to manage work flow, assess productivity and deliver the promised quality to the client.

Training is Inevitable for Contact Center Staff

A contact center executive interacts with a significantly higher number of customers than any personnel of the client company. Thus, the performance of a contact center executive is critical to the image of the company. To this end, periodic training and performance assessment measures are vital.

Training occurs at two levels. Firstly, the contact center provides basic and routine training to their executives. It involves information regarding routine contact center tasks, such as how to answer a call, improving listening traits and being polite to the customer. However, the client company should also take the initiative to train the contact center executives according to their specific requirements. Also, the company should examine and retrain the staff if required.

Technology, training and effective management are the mantras for any contact center to maximize its output. One should remember that the success of any contact center lies in the success of its clients.

How To Relieve Foot Pain After Taekwondo Lessons?

After Taekwondo Lessons, My Feet Always Hurts Especially When I am At home, any tips to avoid having that pain?

Yes, it depends a lot on where the pain is and when you get it. For me, I am a chronic victim of plantar faciitis, aka, plantar worts. It's a nerve problem in the arch and heel. I feel it mostly on waking up in the morning, especially after a hard workout the night before.

For this, I use extra thick rubberized shoe inserts, and it helps a lot.

But other people have bone spurs, tendonitis (achilles tendon), ingrown toenails, even improperly healed breaks. These can all cause post-workout pain (as well as during the workout). You don't say where you have pain, but best is to see a doctor.

Should i go with Art or Taekwondo ?

Okay so i currently take art lessons with this korean miss, and at first things were good i loved the lessons then suddenly things got boring she started teaching me about oriental paintings and writing chinese characters with some kind of black ink which is far more different from what i am interested in (street art) And i have always been interested in martial art so should i just take taekwondo lessons instead? And if you have experienced either art or taekwondo lessons tell me, were you satisfied with the result ?

take taekwondo it is a practicle martial art the things you learn there will stick to you for a life time . i took art lessons once kinda got boring after a while so i left and now im a first degree black belt and ive never felt better about any decision in my life so far and dude if your into street art do it on your own sometimes its best to teach ypurself things instead of others teaching it to you
