Spike Spikes Why do some sprint spikes have 8 spikes, while the others have only 5 spikes?
I'm a track and field runner about to head into his summer track season, and I'm looking to purchase a new pair of spikes. I have been using sprint spikes (as I run the 100 and the 200) with 8 spikes attached to the bottom. Should I make the switch to a 5 spike plate?
More spikes = more traction. At the same time, more spikes = more weight.
Less traction is needed for long distance, so you get less spikes.

It depends upon what type of track you're running on. If it's an all-weather track, I'd suggest 5mm xmas tree spikes; for a cinder track (they do still exist) I'd recommend 7mm or 9mm pyramids because you'll want to dig in a bit.
