whats more effective, taekwondo, or kung fu?

Ive been training in taekwondo for 8 years(im a 3rd degree black belt (but im only 14) (my sensei says he doesent restrict me because of my age, so i take regular tests just like anybody else) and i was wondering if i should take up king fu. i already have a background of karate, ( black belt) judo (red belt) and Jiu juitsu (blue belt ). im not asking for people to rip on the one they dont like, all i want are practical, realistic, honest, opinionated thoughts. thanks in advance for answering

I did kung fu for many years and im only 16. I was a 3rd degree black belt in kung fu, and i thought it was great. New martial arts are always good to take up at a young age especially someone with as much experience as you. But kung fu can be very competitive if you want it to be, or it can be a type of self-discipline. But if you have experience in all of those martial arts, you should pick up kung fu very quickly. You will learn how to handle weapons as well. KUNG FU IS AWESOME.

Taekwondo Techniques and Tactics (book)

Taekwondo Techniques and Tactics (book)

$16.95

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art practiced all over the world. Its popularity stems from many reasons. Virtually everyone who is involved with this art agrees that it is an outstanding way to improve physical fitness, mental focus, and self-discipline. Children who study taekwondo often exhibit greater motivation and increased self-esteem. Besides these benefits, participants can train for competition and learn effective self-defense techniques. The authors have chosen 38 of taekwondo's most effective breakfalls, stances, strikes, kicks, blocks, and steps. Each of these, singly and in combination, is described and illustrated with clear language and photos. The book serves well as a companion to formal instruction or as a stand-alone text. In Taekwondo Techniques & Tactics you'll learn the proper way to stretch, how conditioning will improve your performance, and foolproof strategies for defeating your opponent in the ring. Novices will have no trouble recognizing how to perform techniques. The chapters on the origins, traditions, and language of taekwondo provide a good introduction to the art, including advice on getting started and choosing an instructor. Experienced students will appreciate the level of detail and the tips for improving their techniques. They'll also appreciate the chapters on tactics, conditioning, and preparing for competition. Sidebars on self-defense point out adaptations for effective street defense, whenever these differ from competition techniques or tactics. Advice on competition and tactics is especially strong since both authors were champion competitors. Seabourne is a two-time Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and Pan-American champion and a silver medalist in the World Taekwondo Championships. Park is an undefeated former Korean national champion who moved to America to coach the U.S. National Team. AUDIENCE Reference and trade book for students and martial arts enthusiasts. Fifth Degree Taekwondo Instructor Qualified To Grade?

I currently attend two gyms and the 'grandmasters', both seventh degree black belts, test us for promotion from tenth guep to first guep (from white belt to red belt with a black tag/stripe). An eight degree martial artist marks any examinations starting from first degree black belt.

My friend currently goes to a gym where the fifth degree instructor tested her for her fifth guep (green belt with a blue tag). I was wondering if he was qualified to do so? I, personally, am a first degree black belt and, really, I don't feel like I can teach very well....let alone grade!

For your information, a fifth degree black belt, at the fastest possible legit way, takes around twelve years to earn and an eighth degree black belt will take, minimum, thirty years. A seven degree black belt takes up to twenty three years.

The Koreans borrowed the rank and testing practices used by the Japanese. As such the Japanese do it this way: A 3rd dan that also has a Sensei title can test (it is not called grading, at least not by anyone i know) students up to and including 1st degree black belt (Two levels below his own). That practice is generally followed up the ranks. So a fifth dan should be able to test someone as high as 3rd dan.

But each organization does things their own way. Since you train i in that group, you are subject to their ways of testing someone.

And the school should be called a Dojang since it teaches a Korean art. A gym is a place to do weights, aerobics, ...etc. The term Dojo in Japanese or Dojang in Korean has a much deeper meaning that just Gym or school. Dojo literally means, "The Place Where You Learn The Way". It is used to indicate a place where there is great knowledge to be learned.
