Is Premier martial arts a Mcdojo?

i just started there and was just wondering...

Premier Martial Arts studios are a chain of franchises and I have a former fighter that I trained many years ago who has one. While I would not call it a McDojo I would call it a cookie cutter approach to teaching martial arts for the purpose of making more money. Some of their business practices are quite good like buying in bulk and offering things then to their studio owners cheaper for their students to buy. I do have a problem with their approach to some things though and they have become heavily oriented towards Krav Maga and I have a problem with an instructor who learned it through a CD course and attended a few certification seminars and then teaching that as his main art when that has been their only exposure and extent of their experience with it. They do have some notable people involved with that business group and it shows I think how some aspects of martial arts have gone towards the business and financial side of things at the expense of other aspects. Martial arts was never really intended to make a person rich or make a living for them. I am an independent school owner and do not rely on my martial arts income and there are still some like me that are more concerned with the quality of their students and what they teach than the financial line. I could have had a Premier franchise but after looking at it and how it was set up and more money and business oriented and less of other things that martial arts represents to me I decided against it. A lot will have to do with the instructor and their background and experience and what they add to the cookie cutter program that they have for all their students who attend classes in a Premier studio.

One Response to “Premier Martial Arts”

  1. You really have to check out a school to see if that's what you want. People often have preconceived notions about things and you won't find out if what you believe is true until you see it for yourself. If you want self-defense, pretty much any art can provide that although there are some that focus on this, such as krav maga. Wing chun, mentioned above, is probably also an excellent choice for this. Neither art has a lot of kicks so if you really want to learn kicks then you might want to check out something else. As for "beating the living hell out of someone"…you don't need to learn a martial art for that and most current martial arts would probably frown on that –other than MMA in competition.
