The difference between Muay Thai and kickboxing

Being a martial artist myself, I have had the privilege of not only learning couple of styles, but I also had the chance to understand the dynamics of each. The theory behind the fist; whenever I visit Thailand, I see clubs teaching Muay Thai. But some I see promoting kick boxing too. But one thing that I can't find here is a live kick boxing competition. Every now and then you get to see a van promoting a Muay Thai event. But never did I see anyone promoting a kick boxing, initially it was hard for me to understand. Although I also see the look-alikes Caucasian models (who promote kick boxing clubs) promoting Muay Thai fights but I never saw the same promoting kick boxing fights.

I decided to finally delve into understanding the difference. Here in Asia, every country or nation has its own fighting style. Muay means boxing in Thai language, while Muay Thai obviously means Thai boxing. Malaysians similarly have their own martial arts called Fusilat, Tae Kwando comes from Korea, Judo comes from Japan, while Kung Fu is originated from China, similarly Philippine and Indonesia too have their own styles of boxing.

Muay Thai is not an organized style of combat, it is rather a street fight combination of deadly elbow, knee, kick and punch attacks. It is more related to hoodlum and gang fights than an art conforming to fixed set of moves or Katha. Muay Thai comes naturally to Thai people as it entails everything that can be done for a mortal combat. An important observation is that Muay Thai is not followed anywhere else in Asia, and is actively limited to Thailand and few suburban countries.

Kick boxing has its roots with Bruce Lee, whose untimely demise left Americans to wonder for an incomplete style of oriental combat. During Vietnam War they had an exposure with Muay Thai and there on they developed kick boxing blending with the basic kick and punch technique, enabled by Bruce Lee.

Bruce Lee had his own art named Jeet Kun Do, but the great aspect of this art is that it believes in no art, no fixed movements just free flowing diversion of converting energy and using the techniques with respect to opponents attack. The invincible impact Bruce Lee left on the world still exists.

The cross-over immigration due to globalization led many Caucasians to take interest in these oriental fighting techniques. Kick-boxing is also a resultant style as a combination. While it is easy for a Muay Thai fighter to adjust to Kick Boxing rules in the ring, but it is not easy for a Kick boxer to adjust to Muay Thai rules in a Muay Thai ring.

The reason for this is, there is no fixed pattern of moves in Muay Thai, where Kick Boxing is a formalized arts, infact if we divide it into percentage Kick Boxing is 70% Muay Thai with a Caucasian and necktie.
