Are they really pretty much the same except Judo focuses more on throws and BJJ focuses a little bit more on submissions.
Would a Judo Black belt be able to hang with a BJJ Blue or Purple belt?
Judo at the higher levels of training has a lot of ground work and submission holds in it providing you are training at a school focused on teaching Judo correclty...if it is a school aimed at sport competition then more focus is placed on throws than submissions.
I have many friends who study both and to be honest it goes either way in terms of submitting each other. For example one of my friends is a Machado Black Belt in BJJ and he was submitted by another one of my friends who is a Shodan in Judo. Three weeks later when we were working out the BJJ black belt submitted the Judo guy...and a month later it was reversed yet again.
I enjoy training in both when I have the chance but I personally prefer Judo because I enjoy the throwing aspects more than the ground game. To get a person down is not as easy as one thinks and if you are thrown correctly and on pavement by a Judo black belt your chances of getting up are pretty slim.
